Do Flip-Flops Cause Bunions or Foot Problems?
When it comes to foot health, it can be confusing to know which footwear is best for your feet. We regularly get asked if flip-flops/sandals are a healthier option than other common footwear and the simple answer is usually no, however, the longer answer is a bit more complicated. Today, Bunion Bootie will be discussing whether flip-flops increase foot-related issues such as bunions. If you have additional questions regarding bunions, bunion treatment or healthy shoes, feel free to reach out. We’re always happy to help our customers on their journey to healthier and happier feet.
Selecting Shoes
When it comes to selecting any shoe, whether it is a flip-flop, wedge or running shoe, there are important things to keep in mind. You should always select footwear that has:
- A wide toe box to encourage natural toe splay
- A flexible sole to encourage enhanced foot strength
- A completely flat support platform from heel to toe to encourage natural arch support
Flip-flops obviously meet this criteria quite well, however, it is important to also make sure that the flip-flop/sandal has a proper strapping system and will remain snug on the foot. Another great benefit of flip-flops or sandals are the fact they allow for the feet to be exposed to light and air, promoting an even healthier environment for your feet. If your climate does not allow for open toed shoes, other options exist that still allow for better air and light exposure.
Flip-flops that are designed with heel elevation, rigid soles, toe spring or other problematic design elements should be avoided. Footwear should always be selected that allows the foot to function as naturally as possible.
