Bunions OR Another Foot Problem?

When it comes to our feet, there are a variety of problems that can occur. Bunions (medical term: Hallux Valgus) are an extremely common occurrence among shoe-wearing populations and can often be mistaken for other conditions of the feet. Below are common foot problems that are mistaken for Hallux Valgus and what you can do about them. If you have any additional questions about bunion treatment, feel free to reach out. We have a wide selection of bunion treatment options to select from.

Bursitis

Bursitis is a condition often mistaken for bunions that occurs due to direct external pressure or overuse. The big toe joint bears the entire weight of the body while in motion, making it susceptible to bursitis. Bursitis of the big toe joint is trapped inflammatory fluid between the skin and bone.

Bony Prominence

While many people think Hallux Valgus is a bony growth coming out of the foot, it is not. However, bony prominences do occur. When the bone becomes enlarged, it can actually resemble a bunion. X-rays can be used to determine whether you have a bony prominence or require bunion treatment.

Big Toe Joint Arthritis

One of the most common conditions mistaken for Hallux Valgus is big toe joint arthritis. Bone spurs (known as hallux rigidus) form on the big toe joint as a result of degenerating cartilage. The skin overlying the bone spur can become red, inflamed and painful, very similar to a bunion, however they often occur on the top of the big toe joint, not the side.  Patients with arthritis can look towards natural remedies to reduce the inflammation before succumbing to the dependency of pain relievers.

Gout

Gout is another common condition that is mistaken for bunions. Gout causes the big toe joint (along with other joints) to develop internal crystals, as a result of an overabundance of uric acid in the bloodstream. These uric acid crystals cause intense pain in the big toe joint and often need to be diagnosed with x-rays.
