Proper Toe and Foot Alignment Improves Blood Flow & Can Reduce Plantar Fasciitis Symptoms
There are several reasons why a patient might have poor circulation in the feet; bunions, diabetes, Raynaud’s Disease, and blood clots are just a few. Often those with bunions will experience toe numbness from the compression of their footwear. When blood circulation is reduced in the foot, it can actually impact thick connective tissue known as the plantar fascia, leading to degeneration and death to the corresponding tissue. Over time, a condition known as plantar fasciitis can occur, resulting in mobility issues, discomfort and pain for the patient. Realigning the big toe can improve blood flow to certain areas of the foot and toes, preventing and even reducing common associated side effects.
Natural Toe Alignment Supports Natural Arch Support
Arch support is an extremely important part of foot and toe health, when the arch is in proper alignment, it is able to support an extremely large amount of weight. When the arch is properly configured, applying additional weight to the foot arch can also improve the strength of the entire foot. Realigning the big toe when it is deviated can encourage natural arch support, improving a patient’s ability to properly, and more efficiently carry their weight.
When the arch is compromised, not only are bunions a threat, but the patient is also more susceptible to over-pronation, plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, heel spurs, and knee problems.
Proper Toe Alignment May Improve Balance & the Ability to Spread Weight Evenly
Much like every other animal on Earth, humans have evolved to properly function throughout the environment. Part of this evolution is our ability to carry our weight, balance ourselves and walk upright using our feet. In order to have proper balance and weight distribution, it is important that the toes are spread properly (especially the big toe). Realigning a deviated toe can actually stabilize the ankle and foot, acting somewhat like a tripod. Having an appropriate amount of “splay” in your toe positions improves balance and evenly spreads weight over the surface of the patient’s foot.
Those suffering from bunions often alter their gate in order to reduce the pressure or impact on the bunion. This change in gait causes the patient to walk inefficiently and in a manner not conducive to proper body alignment. This can cause secondary problems and pains for the patient.
