Stretches/Exercises/Massages for Bunion Symptoms

Do you or a loved one suffer from hallux valgus also commonly known as a bunion? Want to avoid surgery but would like to experience relief from the daily discomfort, pain and mobility issues often associated with bunion formation? At Bunion Bootie, we are dedicated to non-surgical and natural treatment options for those that suffer from bunions. While bunion surgery can be a great last-resort, we highly recommend trying other methods first as surgery can have various complications. Today, we’re discussing exercises, stretches and massages that can be helpful for your day-to-day bunion treatment. These various things can greatly improve flexibility, mobility and muscle strength for the affected area. Have questions about bunions or our various bunion products? Feel free to reach out, we’re always happy to help.

Why Should I Exercise/Stretch With Bunions?

According to a study published in April, 2015 about stretches and bunion treatment, certain exercises such as the toe spread exercise can be highly effective for those that suffer from mild to moderate hallux valgus (bunions), improving mobility and overall symptoms. Here are some exercises, stretches and massages that can help reduce your daily bunion discomfort and pain:

Bunion Toe Stretches – During toe stretches, you should point your toes straight out for 5-10 seconds, then curl them for 5-10 seconds. Repeat this process at least 10 times daily.. Stretching the toes can reduce discomfort experienced while improving mobility of the toe.

Toe Spread Exercise for Bunions – While keeping your heel and front of your foot on the floor, lift and spread your toes. While spread out, try to push your little to down to the floor, then push your big toe down toward the inside of your foot. Repeat this process a few times a day. Spreading and stretching your toes can reduce mobility issues and discomfort that often accompany bunion formation.

Bunion Resistance Exercise – Using a towel or piece of fabric, wrap it around the big toe and then gently pull the toe toward you. While pulling your toe toward you, be sure to push against the restraint. This can help strengthen the muscles in the area, reduce discomfort and improve mobility of the big toe.

Pickup Game for Bunions – For this exercise you’ll need marbles and a bowl. Place the marbles on the floor and then pick them up using your toes and place them inside of the bowl. Repeat this until you’ve picked up all of the marbles. This exercise can be repeated a few times a day if necessary.

Bunion Massage – A bunion massage can help stretch the muscle typically impacted by bunion formation. Take your toe and stretch and massage it, moving it around. You’ll notice a trigger point, where the muscle is shortened, continue to rub the area. This massage can be performed multiple times a day.

The morning and evening are great times to practice your bunion exercises, stretches and massages. The ultimate goal is to be consistent.
