Invest in Wider Running Shoes
Did you know that your shoes play one of the biggest roles in bunion formation? When it comes to selecting your running shoes, you should always select a shoe that has a wider toe box. Shoes with a narrow toe box force the toes into certain positions, putting unnecessary stress on the joints. Eventually, this pressure can result in the formation of bunions or other foot deformities. Many online shoe stores such as Zappos, will allow you to filter shoes based upon width, we recommend looking for running shoes on these sites. Buying new shoes at the recommended mile mark or alternating pairs of running shoes between long runs can help tremendously also.
Redo Your Laces
Those of us that have been running with bunions for some time, and still trying to maintain our mileage, have tried and tested various ways to lace our shoes to take some of the pressure off of the bunions. Believe us, it works. The most common strategy is skipping the hole nearest your bunions. Try it, you’re welcome. 😉

Try Bunion Massages
Massaging and exercising your toe joint can be a wonderful way to reduce bunion discomfort and even prevent bunion formation. First, hold your big toe in the middle firmly, then gently pull the toe out. You should feel an increase in the space between your toe joint, hold this position for a few moments. Next, push your toe downward, followed by returning it to the neutral position, then pull the toe upward, following by returning it to the neutral position again. You should also gently push the toe left, then neutral, then right, then neutral. The basic idea is stretching and exercising the area, preventing it from feeling stiff and uncomfortable.
